When the oxygen sensor tracks the oxygen in the exhaust, it compares it with the oxygen level outside. This result is forwarded to the engine's computer system. The system then adjusts the oxygen ratio to the fuel. By doing this, the oxygen sensor helps to prevent toxic emissions from the exhaust system.
