Checking the transmission fluid is pretty easy. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean while your engine idles in park and is warm. Reinsert the dipstick for an accurate reading. You should look at fluid's appearance and levels, as a dark color or low reading might indicate a looming danger. A good transmission fluid would have a transparent bright color.

Regular Maintenance

The regular maintenance of your transmission will go a long way in keeping it reliable and prevent irreparable damage. While some manufacturers recommend getting the transmission fluid changed at every 15,000 miles, others recommend 30,000 miles.

Shifting from Drive all the way to Reverse while your vehicle is in motion is not good for your transmission. Ensure you bring your vehicle to a total stop before changing gears. This will ensure your transmission lasts longer and stays functional so you don't find yourself stuck in Park when wanting to leave work.

Symptoms That Your Transmission is Due for Servicing

When your transmission is due for maintenance, there are some telltale signs that hint at a problem. The warning signs include:

• Transmission Slipping: Proper and routine maintenance will help keep your transmission functioning optimally. When your transmission is due for maintenance, you may notice it slipping in and out of gears especially when climbing or descending hills.
• Leaking Transmission Fluid: Fluid leakage from your vehicle undercarriage is never a good sign.
