This is done by a vehicle fluid called coolant or antifreeze, and aided by cooling system components such as the radiator, water pump, thermostat, heater core, and hoses.

With continuous use over the years, the coolant becomes degraded and contaminated, losing its heat-transferring capacity. That’s why the vehicle undergoes a coolant flush. The coolant flush, also known as a radiator flush, is the process of thoroughly removing old coolant along with accumulated contaminants from the system and refilling it with new coolant.

Cooling System Flush Procedure

  • Initial Drain: The old, degraded, and contaminated coolant is drained from its reservoir and radiator. During this phase, approximately 60-70% of the contaminated fluid is removed, and the remaining portion remains in the form of sludge and deposits, along with coolant in the engine block and heater core.
  • Draining With Cleaning Solution: A specialized cleaning solution, also known as a flush chemical, is introduced in the cooling system along with distilled water. This helps in thinning and removing the degraded coolant and sludge that have become stuck to the engine block, heater core, and hoses, along with system rust and scale. Using a specialized flushing tool and running the engine for a limited period, the flush chemical is circulated throughout the system thoroughly, so that all the contaminants are replaced. Then the flushing chemical is thoroughly drained.
  • Water Treatment: After draining the flush chemical, the cooling system is treated with water, preferably distilled water, to rinse the system of any residues. This process is repeated multiple times, and the cooling system is thoroughly rinsed till all the contaminants and old coolants are removed from the system.
